Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have fundamentally transformed the world, and the traditional fields of information theory have also experienced significant changes. Data compression is among the most immediately affected areas due to its close ties to signal processing and estimation. On one hand, AI/ML techniques, such as neural networks and generative models, can enhance the efficiency of data compression algorithms, which often leads to new formulations of classical information-theoretic problems; on the other hand, the extensive theory developed in data compression can provide valuable insights into AI/ML models and their underlying mechanisms. Given the close connection between data compression and AI/ML, this special issue aims to highlight recent developments at the intersection of these two disciplines.

What role can information theory and its rigorous approach to thinking about communications play in 6G? Can information theory continue to help push the boundaries of communication systems? What are key bottlenecks and problems that information and communication theorists should work on in the 6G era? The goal of this special issue is to explore questions such as these and help frame the important theoretical research questions for the next 5-10 years at the intersection of information theory and wireless communications. At present, small quantum computers from a variety of companies can already be accessed on the cloud. In this special issue, we will examine how information theorists are already helping the "second quantum revolution" and what potential opportunities lie ahead.
